Need help getting threw slow times for my staff and getting the salon back on its feet after a stylist leaves and take her clientel

I have 10 stations all commission, we are an ethnic salon. There are no sucessful ethinic salons in my area. So, I feel like its tryail and area. It has been a trying year. Mostly trying to staff the salon. I got 1 bad apple and shes gone thank God. But she tanted the rest of them. made the others resistant towards me. TheY want me to do everything for them. my maine stylist left because she listen to the one i fired. now the money is gone and the traffic in the salon has been really slow. I hired 2 go getters. I hope this will make the others get off their butts and build their own clientel. I am behind on my own bills because of the salon. I dont know what to do. I have tried everything. Any suggestions?

Call a staff meeting and let them know how you feel and reassure them they are your priority. Meet with them individually to come up with weekly goals and rewards for meeting the goals. Come up with a service promo and ask local newspapers and radio stations to help you out with any free advertisement or free news story if they can. Launch a facebook campaign with pictures of you, your staff and clients to give examples of your work. Ask staff to facebook as well. We are moving into income tax return time so take advantage of each client by asking them to rebook and send you his/her friends. You can do this!

we are doing face book daily. the staff meeting is in place. yes we will be talking about putting some packages togather.for valentines day and  thank you for that

This is always a tough situation when someone leaves and takes their guests.  The first thing I would recommend as a coach would be to get letters out to all those guests and thank them for their loyalty and offer them 60% off their return visit to come back to your salon, even for extra services that may not be available in the new salon.  Another action that will help cash flow is to have a 3 day window in the middle of the month to offer gift cards for $100 to get and extra $25 value.  Limit it to 3 days only at a time and be sure to save 52% and use the rest to meet your financial demands.

I hope this helps!

We are trying something new called Girls Night Out. This monday is our first one. Basically for 2 hours from 6-8 on a mondy night we will do 7 people (1 can be a regular client and the rest have to be new clients to the salon)-we will give them a free haircut blow dry, mini facial (15 min) min pedi (15 min) and eyebrow and there is no charge for any of this. At the end of the evening we will offer a deep discount pkg like 3 haircuts for 99.00 that if they buy right then they can use them for their next 3 haircuts and at the end of the 3rd haircut they can reupt and buy again. However, if they don't buy that night the offer is not valid again. We require a 125.00 deposit for the salon and if they cancel within 24 hours and that is not refundable if they don't show. If they do they get it back at the end of the night. Everyone must be 18 years and we do not allow birthday parties, etc. This is because our staff is offering their time for free in hopes of gaining new clients. BTW we check to see if they have been there before. One of my new stylists did this in their place where they didn't have zero walkins and she says it generated a lot of traffic. I will let you know the follow up if it is successful or not. Also we will put out a tip jar for everyone to share at the end of the night.

I feel you on this! We are in a similar situation, I had a busy stylist leave 2 weeks agoto go rent a salon suite.  Although this is truely a blessing because she was DRAMA all the time, consistantly off work for personal problems, and completely self-centered, it is always a financial challenge when someone leaves.  We have only been open 4 years, and we were just barely able to pay our bills before she left, but in the long run I believe my salon will be stronger because the negativity and drama is gone, and so will yours!! Keep your chin up, PRAY alot and work hard, it will work out!!!

Do you have any suggestions on how to attract GOOD stylists with some clientelle?? This is a challenge for me, I have great "new talent" that have finished my training program, and are doing awesome, but it takes time to grow them.. I need someone to fill the gap in the meantime!!

Hi Cari,

We are having results with the Craig's lIst ad:

We are interviewing for accomplished stylists that are looking for a career path.  We offer a progressive level system and culture for growing and adding to your existing business.  Whether you are a commissioned stylist or independent contractor, our commissioned salon can help you to grow your income.

Hope this helps you,

Roberta Dotson
