I'm a new Salon owner. I'm trying to figure out how to pay my stylists. I start everyone out hourly for the first three months while we are in are intro period. Now I'm nearing the end of 3 months and I'm not sure what to do. Do they switch to commission, if so, how much, how many levels should I have, attached to what kinds of benchmarks. It is very confusing! I want to be fair, but also realistic, and I have asked a few people that I network with who have been in the business a while and they seem jaded--I don't want to create an "us and them" culture.

Jeanne,
I would sugguest looking into the Summit. They have a black and white plan fo salon owners that makes sense. I have a pay structure in my salon that offers salary or commision which ever is greater. This way they are in control of their income as well as you keep control of your salon because they are still emploee's. If they do not reach commision on a weekly basis in a timely manner then you know that they just might not work out.
Again look up the Summit Salon Business, it is all over this site and will be one of the best things that you have ever done.
Hope this helps
Cindy
Thanks Cindy!

Permalink Reply by kim oakes on March 9, 2012 at 9:46pm jeanne, I have been in your shoes I encourage you to pay them comm. only, it def encourages people to stand on there own two feet and be in charge of what type of money they want to make. People who want to earn real money put the extra effort into going after clientelle and retaining them. I have been in business for 9 years and I have tried both ways and without a doubt go to comm only- don't feel bad. The real stylists will stand on there feet and rise to the occasion. sometimes you have to learn what its like to be hungry. good luck either way
