Leadership: by Coach Tony Dungy
FROM TONY DUNGY’S BOOK The Mentor Leader:
Success for a mentor leader is measured by different standards than those commonly accepted in our society. Mentor leadership is all about shaping, nurturing, empowering, and growing. It’s all about relationships, integrity, and perpetual learning. Success is measured in changed lives, strong character, and eternal values, rather than in material gain, temporal achievement, or status. Ultimately, mentor leadership is just as successful in achieving the standards of accomplishment in our society. But unlike other types of leadership, it is primarily concerned with building and adding value to the lives of people in the process. It’s about changing lives.”

When I began this salon owner adventure in 2000, I had plenty to learn (just ask my wife, Kelly!). Entering the salon industry as a non-beauty professional had both advantages and disadvantages. The initial disadvantage was that it took me a long time to understand the mind of a hairstylist. On the other hand, I had a keen advantage: an objective viewpoint of the industry as a business. I saw that the industry was filled with people with limited business backgrounds. My salons had the edge of our blended approach: business acumen combined with a salon culture that supported artistry.
RE-DEFINING THE ROLE OF SALON OWNER
In the beginning, my role was strictly based on need - whatever needed to be done, I did it! But when I
attended a KRS Summit in 2003, I agreed, I was impressed by the words of Randy Kunkel, who proposed that instead of thinking about business in terms of what it business could do for you, to shift my thinking into what could I do for my business.
Super Bowl winning football coach, author, and motivational speaker Tony Dungy is another voice of wisdom in my development as a salon owner. Over the years, Tony’s books have made a big impact on me. His latest is no exception. Everything I do is in an effort to grow stylists. I am their resource and their quarterback -- always here to help them to have the best day, week, year ever!
Since I re-programmed my thinking, the results have been exponentially better. When you focus on your team first, monetary rewards will follow!
