RECRUIT NON-STOP!

I believe that you should recruit staff year round. I share that with every Summit tour group that visits our salons. It is physically impossible for your salon or spa to ever reach or sustain 100% productivity. Yet you would never want to reach this level, and here’s why: at the point where you approach 80% (or higher) productivity, your salon is literally turning away business.

So, if 100% productivity is not possible, and you turn away business above 80% productivity, then shouldn't you be recruiting all the time?

When is comes to the timing aspect of recruiting, most salon owners practice the same game plan - recruiting as a knee-jerk reaction to the painful experience of a walk-out or the abrupt loss of a significant percentage salon income for whatever reason.

Take a proactive approach. Don’t wait until you lose a key service provider to start thinking about how to re-coup the income losses by flooding the floor with new blood. If you are always in recruiting mode, you will be less likely to make poor hiring decisions out of desperation.

My salons always have room for the “right” person on our team.

POSITIONING YOURSELF FOR RECRUITS

A stylist in search of a new opportunity will go to two well-known sources, Google and Craigslist. If you know where they’re going to be looking, why not meet them there?

If you don’t already have a page dedicated to “Employment Opportunities” or “Careers”, then get with your web designer and add one. Make it easy to apply with an online application. Feel free to check out my salons' website: (http://www.newidentitiessalon.com/New-Identities-Salon-Application.htm)

Also consider submitting a job posting on Redken’s own “The Salon Professional Academy” (TSPA) website, under TSPA PLACEMENT. This is a free online resource that gives you access to TSPA’s jobs posting board.

Happy recruiting!
